Who We Are
Founded in 2016, Science and Arts Engagement New York (SAENY), a nonprofit 501©3 corporation, partnered with The City College of New York (CCNY), to create the Harlem Gallery of Science (HGS). We are dedicated to expanding access to science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and emerging career opportunities for young people. HGS develops engaging educational experiences and exhibitions that connect community learning with real-world science and technology, higher education, mentorship, and career pathways.
We believe that by creating high-impact and innovative learning experiences, you can support the development and improvement of essential skills such as critical thinking, complex problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, aid in the development of social-emotional skills, and build self-confidence, propelling them into a world of opportunities and helping them navigate its complexities.
Core Principles
Experiential Learning
Learning is an active and life-long process requiring opportunities for conversation, practice, and reflection. Learners have valuable prior knowledge and experiences that support meaning-making and can be leveraged to make connections to the real world and their lived experiences.
Youth-Centered Learning
Young people are engaged in learning on their own terms, in ways that reflect their experiences, and seek active opportunities to build new skills.
Interactive Exhibitions
Good exhibitions can create new ways to engage in concepts and used to introduce and broaden student understanding of the role science and technology play in their everyday lives.
Interconnected Systems
The systems that shape our world are interconnected, and to fully understand them, you have to look at them holistically and through an interdisciplinary lens.
